What is endovenous chemical ablation?

Endovenous chemical ablation is an outpatient treatment option for varicose veins that combines sclerotherapy and ultrasound technology, and that's sometimes called ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy.

Endovenous chemical ablation can be used as an alternative to the more invasive treatment known as vein stripping and ligation.

Dr. Haraway performs this treatment option by tapping into ultrasound technology to guide him through the procedure to precisely target the damaged vein.

Next, he inserts a chemical irritant into the damaged vein. As in sclerotherapy, the chemical causes the vein to collapse and seal shut.

When treatment is complete, you wear a compression stocking on the treated leg for a minimum of two weeks and can usually return to work the next day.*

Are there other, non-chemical options to close off damaged veins?

Yes. There’s an option called endovenous thermal ablation, which uses thermal energy to close off affected veins. Another treatment option called VenaSeal™ doesn’t use chemical irritants or thermal energy but instead uses a special, proprietary medical adhesive.

Dr. Haraway administers the adhesive using a dispensing gun connected to a catheter. He uses ultrasound to guide him during the procedure so that he can inject the adhesive in specific areas along the damaged vein.

When Dr. Haraway completes the procedure, he places a small bandage over the entry location. Patients can resume normal activities immediately.*

What are the benefits of endovenous chemical ablation?
