What are varicose veins?

Varicose veins are enlarged, twisted and bulging veins. The most common place you see them are in the legs and feet because standing and walking increase the pressure in those veins. Many people dislike them for cosmetic reasons, however, if left untreated they can cause serious medical issues like blood clots, skin ulcerations and wounds that won’t heal.

Healthy veins carry blood against gravity into the heart. Inside the veins are one way valves that stop the blood from flowing backwards. If the valves become weak or fail, the blood doesn’t travel to the heart like it should. Instead, it pools or backs up inside of the vein. This is called venous reflux. The pressure from this backflow causes the weak veins to bulge, becoming varicose veins.

The most common symptoms are:

  • Leg swelling
  • Pain in the legs
  • Itching around the vein
  • Bulging unsightly veins
  • Heaviness in the leg
  • Aching legs
  • Leg cramps
  • Swelling of ankles
  • Restless legs
  • Skin discoloration in legs
  • Texture changes
  • Open wounds on ankles
  • Stasis dermatitis/eczema

There are many causes for varicose veins, the main one being heredity. If both of your parents have varicose veins, you have a 90% chance of having them yourself. If one parent has varicose veins, you have a 50% chance of having them. Other causes can be age, trauma to the vein, pregnancy and occupation. Sitting or standing for long periods of time create strain on veins.
